چکیده

Directional decomposition of GPR data is possible when multi-component multi-offset GPR data is available on a surface. The decomposed wave fields are propagating in the two opposite directions perpendicular to the recording surface. These two decomposed wave fields are related to each other through a reflection operator. This operator represents the reflection response of the medium on the side of the surface that is source free, and with the receivers acting as both sources and receivers. Here we illustrate the concept in a one-dimensional setting and show how this concept can be used for different GPR applications.

Interferometric imaging by deconvolution: theory and numerical examples

Seismic interferometry is a field of growing interest in exploration seismology. In this paper we provide the theoretical basis for performing interferometry by deconvolution. We argue that for general models, deconvolution interferometry gives only the causal scattering response between any two receivers, as opposed to cross-correlation which gives both causal and acausal scattering responses....

Deterministic Deconvolution of Ground‐Penetrating‐Radar Data at a Limestone Quarry

A 30 m by 30 m two-dimensional grid was designed on a flat bench behind a quarry face of predominantly limestone with thin shale layers located at a Bonner Springs, Kansas site to test the utility of ground-penetrating radar (GPR) for stratigraphic studies. GPR data were collected along seven lines parallel to the quarry face and seven lines perpendicular to the quarry face, each separated by 5...

Interferometry by deconvolution: Part 2 — Theory for elastic waves and application to drill-bit seismic imaging

Deconvolution interferometry successfully recovers the impulse response between two receivers without the need for an independent estimate of the source function. Here we extend the method of interferometry by deconvolution to multicomponent data in elastic media. As in the acoustic case, elastic deconvolution interferometry retrieves only causal scattered waves that propagate between two receiv...

New Results on Clutter Reduction and Parameter Estimation for Landmine Detection Using Gpr

One of the main problems with the interpretation of GPR data is the strong ground reflection, obscuring signals arriving from just underneath the surface. The strength of this reflection can be reduced by deconvolution. This technique is especially useful when GPR is used to detect buried landmines. Parametric and non parametric time variant estimators are used for clutter characterization. Wav...

Interferometry in Perturbed Media

Interferometry recovers the impulse response of waves propagating between two sensors as if one of them acts as a source. The primary focus of this thesis is on providing a framework for interferometry based on perturbation theory that can be used for the direct reconstruction of the portion of the data that is of interest for imaging and inversion methodologies. I derive general reciprocity th...
